I am appealing my financial aid suspension because of difficulty completing my courses. Last semester was my first semester at PVCC. I believe that my work schedule prevented me from meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress. I worked 40+ hours a week. Without financial aid I would not be able to take the courses I need to be admitted to ASU.

The Steps I am going to take or have taken to assure successful academic progress in the future:

Cut back on my work hours so that I may have more time to study.

Obtain a tutor for the classes I find difficult. I have made myself familiar with the tutoring center on campus.

Meet with each of my instructors a talk with them about what they believe will make me a better student in their class.

Go to the scheduled office hours of each instructor when I am having difficulty with the class material.

Develop a relationship with other students to form study groups.

Talk with my advisor at ASU who is assisting me in my transfer process. She advises me of the classes and hours I need to be admitted to ASU.

Go to class on time as scheduled.

I believe that I was letting work get in the way of school. My schedule was very demanding and it left little time to study. I have cut my hours back to 32-36 per week in order to have more time to study.

I have talked with my ASU advisor. She is aware of my current situation and has signed a contract with me in order so I might attend ASU. I hope to complete my B.S. in bio-chemistry at ASU. Without financial aid, I lack the ability to continue on with my education. I am a hard working student and the upcoming semester will prove so. My education is of paramount importance to me. Thank you for your time.

enrolling

I was about to enroll then, when my mother told me that my father was rushed to the hospital. She told me that he had fallen from a roof top. His head cracked and his body was injured .Suddenly my life turned into blur. It was painful to realize that my father is dying. I saw my mother crying in the hospital-helpless. I decided to be strong for my family. We don’t have any relatives here, so we can only cling to each other. Every day we look for money. The medicines were so costly that we couldn’t afford to buy them all. My father was always in pain. We have tried almost everything to get money from all resources, but still we can’t make it through. The doctor told us that if he will not be operated soon, the blood will continue to clot in his brain. I don’t know what to do. I went in a chapel and ask God for his mercy. I have been faithful to him and still I am. I know that he will never leave my family; he will help me and will never let my father die. He had his plans and I know it’s for good. All I have to do is to trust him. I went home hoping that God would answer me. I was on my way home when I saw a wallet slid down from a woman riding a motorcycle. I immediately pick up the wallet and look for any identification. I was surprised to see a bundle of money straight from the bank. I was very happy because God had answered my prayers. Now, my father can be operated. But the realization came rushing down my spine. The money isn’t mine, it’s a sin. This is not God’s answer to my prayers. There could be something else. I thank God for giving me a clear mind amidst my darkest hours. After I entrusted the wallet in a radio station, I wearily went back to the hospital. My mother came rushing and happily embraced me. PCSO (Philippines Charity and Sweepstakes Office) had given us financial support. Gods amazing grace did not end there, after the operation the doctor declared that my father was free from any danger.

Today, problems are still crashing our lives but these only makes us strong. It teaches us to be humble. It makes us the person we are now. It builds our character. They say that our character will sprout amidst our trials.

I quit my job and apply for a scholarship in one of the university in our town. The school grants me a student assistantship program wherein I am required to work everyday for a 21 units tuition fee. Sometimes, it’s difficult for me especially during enrollment. There are always conflicts between my working schedules and classes. There are times when we have to buy books or projects, to afford them I just skip meals and walk to and from the school. Even it’s hard, I endures them just to finish my education. But still, there are problems that arises, and that is our major problems. The school is expected to pay for only 21 units, further that we should carry the cost. Sometimes I am required to take 26 or more units. We couldn’t afford it so I just under load. Another problem is we still have to pay for my miscellaneous, we find it difficult to pay since my father has no permanent jobs. We were fortunate if he could found 3 to 4 days work in a week. My father is becoming weak again and he still had his ulcer which pains him almost everyday. We really have to pull together to make it through. Because of these, I am afraid if I could still continue without further support. I am excelling in class. Last semester, I was given recognition as one of the president’s lister - a prestigious award given for having outstanding grades in the university.

It’s been four years since my father had nearly die in an accident. After his survival, I was forced to stop my college studies. Because of the accident, there are things which he could no longer do, and that includes working. My mother looked for a job which enables him to look for our father at the same time. I decided to help my mother, I applied as a saleslady. I was working for nearly three years when my father decided to start doing light jobs again. I’m still pinning my hope on education; I know that it’s the only way I could get to free us from poverty. I ask my parents if I could go back to school. I know that it’s hard financially but we can make it.

Character amidst trials

When someone asks me for a piece of advice, I always included these statements. “Nobody goes through life unscathed, we get wounded, bruised, if not totally battered, knockout. As we live, we encounter hardships. Some, we bring upon ourselves as a consequences of a bad decisions or neglect. Some, God allows to happened on us for a purpose”. I’m confident that somehow these would comfort them because these are the same words that comforts me and keeps me strong amidst our trials.

Volunteering

I was a child then when my parents had instilled in our minds that the most rewarding life is one in which there is a major element of volunteering and serving others. Volunteering exist to help the community. It gives us an opportunity to change people’s lives, including our own. Ever since I always wanted to support a cause but I know that at this moment I couldn’t afford to donate money. That is why I donate my time instead.

In our school, I am active in my two organizations. One organization is Gabay, wherein we engage in several service projects and volunteer works. Every Saturday we conduct tutorial classes in some remote areas in our town. We also give them food and used clothing. It is a whole day activity from 9 am to 5 pm. Every first Sunday of the month, we conduct a tree planting activity in the foot of mount Isarog. The activity is full of fun because we are able to combine bonding and saving mother earth. Sometimes when we have free time we conduct a clean up drive outside our school campus. Another organization is APSA (Association for Psychology Atenians). We also have tutorials there but we focused more on improving our lives as a whole. We conduct formation and assessing programs wherein the applicants would better understand them selves. In our parish, I am the youth barangay coordinator. Every summer, we sponsor a recollection program for out of school youth. We lead them to God and we let them feel that they are not worthless. As a youth barangay coordinator, I am responsible for the rapport among our members. I am also one of the responsible for seeking funds to support our activities and programs.

From this entire community services and volunteer works, I am grateful that I was given a chance to help other people. In my simple ways, I was able to help lift up their lives. I am happy to be a volunteer because in it I was able to achieved fulfillment. Volunteering teaches me great lessons that I can use to further my self. I learned how fortunate I am to have a kind of life I have now, good health, happy family and loving friends.I was able to appreciate what I have, before I often complained of my clothes, our food and our house but in volunteering I have discovered that while I complained of what little I have there are people who have nothing to put in their stomach, who do not have a roof to spent the night with, who do not have a single garments to protect their body. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is giving from what little I have and not from my excess, that I must live simply so that I could share more with others.

What made me pursue my career-B.S. Psychology

I was often fascinated by individuals of different behaviors exhibiting different emotions. I wonder how personality, cognition and social relationships developed, influenced and change over the course of a lifetime. I have heard of a course that focuses and studies about these things – Psychology. But these did not satisfy me to take that career. It was until our last volunteer work during my high school years.

I was preparing our food when I felt a tug on my sleeve. Turning, I found my self face to face with a child. She was begging me to give her some food because it was two days ago since her last meal. I took pity on her and when I was about to hand her a sandwich, a lady came rushing and abruptly took the sandwich. I found out that the lady was the child’s mother. What was more was I found out that the mother was suffering from insanity. As they start their journey, I wonder if what could I possibly do more the help them. I know that the sandwich will last for hours but if the fullness subsides they will again face the life’s uncertainty. I developed empathy for them and for those people who are going through the same thing. I felt a sudden urge to work in a community to help underprivileged children and their parents. I want to understand what caused other people to have psychological and emotional illness. It made me pursue B.S, Psychology. With its various fields, I know that It will equip me with the knowledge needed to learn, understand and help them.

My education will prepare me to be knowledgeable to things I might encounter in the future. I also believe that my education will prepare me to help unfortunate people and contribute to my countries development. Indeed, education is the best weapon against the bondage of poverty, because with it, I can be capable of having good jobs and opportunities to help my country rise from poverty. It will give me ideas which I can use to turn Philippines into a progressive country. It will also help me to realize more of our real situation and thus motivate me to make further move to support our government in its endeavors. With my education, I can have so many opportunities to help people with their lives and sad plights, educate them about personality, lives and status. If I could help them to understand and gain insights on how to alleviate their conditions, somehow they could be better and this will contribute and lead to countries development and progress.
